The word Antioxidant is being thrown around almost every day. But do you know what they are and if we really need them? Antioxidants are nutrients that slow down or prevent oxidative damage in our body. When cells in our body use oxygen they generate free radicals, which cause cellular damage. Antioxidants act as free radicals preventing and repairing the damage done by free radicals.
Here are lists of foods that are naturally rich in antioxidants: Nuts, whole grains, vegetables, vegetable oil, citrus fruit, tomatoes, green leafy veggies, apricots, cantaloupe, squash, broccoli, sweet potatoes, carrots, soy, red wine, pomegranate, cranberries, blueberries, dark green fruits and vegetables such as kiwi, spinach, Brussels sprouts to name a few. These foods contain an antioxidant called Alpha Lipoic acid, however, the concentration found is less.
What is Alpha Lipoic Acid?
Alpha-lipoic acid is an antioxidant that is found in many foods and is also naturally produced in our bodies. Alpha Lipoic acid helps people with type 2 diabetes, nerve damage and even helps with some symptoms of dementia. Some studies have shown that around 600 mg of Alpha Lipoic acid daily is good for people with diabetes and neuropathy. Since the concentration of this antioxidant is low in naturally found foods, one can resort to taking supplements to bridge the gap.
Zenith Nutrition Alpha Lipoic Acid Dietary Supplement
Zenith Nutrition Alpha Lipoic Acid Dietary Supplement claims
“Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) is a natural compound that functions as a co-factor in vital, energy-producing reactions. The body produces very little ALA on its own, and it is difficult to obtain sufficient quantities from diet. ALA is well known as a powerful antioxidant. It has been called a “universal antioxidant” because it is effective in water-based substances such as blood, while its reduced metabolite, dihydrolipoic acid (DHLA), is effective in fatty tissues and membranes.”
