I don’t get dandruff often. But when I do I normally reach for my The Body Shop Ginger Anti Dandruff Shampoo. I love it and I have been using it for years. But there is one thing; you can never skip using conditioner with this shampoo, as the shampoo tends to be drying. My husband is one of those people who rarely uses a conditioner, and hence started my quest for non-drying effective anti-dandruff shampoos. First stop – Himalaya Anti Dandruff Shampoo.
The product claims to “Himalaya Anti-Dandruff Shampoo is specially formulated with botanical extracts that help control dandruff and provide nourishment to hair shafts. Fortified with herbal ingredients our shampoos are effective, natural and gentle on hair.
Tea Tree Oil a natural anti-fungal agent effectively treats dandruff;
Aloe Vera softens hair and soothes scalp, thus controlling itchy sensation;
Chickpea a rich source of natural protein helps nourish hair. ”

My Experience with Himalaya Anti Dandruff Shampoo
Himalaya Anti Dandruff Shampoo is a pale white runny shampoo with a mild fragrance. The shampoo comes in a simple white pack with a green flip open cap. The packaging is sturdy and spill proof. The anti dandruff shampoo is also easily available and economically priced.
My husband has almost used up this shampoo and I personally tried this a couple of times as well. While the shampoo has goodness of tea tree oil, aloe vera and chickpea, it doesn’t seem to do much for dandruff. It does help a wee bit, but that’s all. The pack is almost over and I can barely see any difference in the dandruff. The shampoo is undoubtedly on the dry side and can leave hair feeling dry & frizzy. It doesn’t seem to help much with the itchiness either. I have tried this after oiling my hair and it took 2 washes to remove oil. Overall, if you are looking for a budget anti-dandruff shampoo that works well this isn’t the one.
The Good
- Easily available
- Affordable pricing
- Cleanses hair decently
- Contains the goodness of tea tree oil and aloe vera
- Has a mild fragrance
- Sturdy packaging
The Bad
- Not as effective on dandruff
- Can leave hair feeling a little dry and frizzy
- Has a slightly runny texture
- Requires multiple washes to remove oil
Overall verdict: 2.5 / 5
Price: Rs. 70/- for 100 ml

Ohh, I have used this. It ruined me and my roommates hair. I had a haircut and the hair stylist was like what did you do with your hair it was so damaged.
I thought my TBS shampoo was drying. But this is worse. At least TBS worked on dandruff.
If you are talking about the Ginger one yes that one TBS dries but it worked on dandruff. I combined it with the banana conditioner so drying was nullified plus applying egg masks helped. this was 4-5 years ago. Now I wash my hair with egg masks only no shampoo so no dandruff during winters.
Yup. I rarely get dandruff but when I do I reach for TBS Ginger Anti Dandruff Shampoo. And I love their banana conditioner. Both together work wonderfully. My husband on one hand needs to be reminded to use a conditioner, so the TBS shampoo wouldn’t fit well here.
I had exactly same experience as your. Don’t work oil removal as well as dandruff 🙁 baby shampoo from Himalaya is way better than this 🙂

I haven’t tried the baby shampoo. I have tried their Protein shampoo and it is quite good. But this anti dandruff one was rather disappointing.
God! this is a real dud!

Yeah. The shampoo really doesn’t do much.
Huh!! this shampoo made my hair dry..caused hair fall too 🙁 I just hate it.. I like himalayas face washes though.

I love their face washes and masks. Even their Protein Shampoo is amazing. But this failed me.
I have same experience as you. I have much dandruff problem and i was having high hope with this but it fails to fulfill. It is not cleaning dandruff scalp at all.
Did you find any other shampoo that worked for you?
Currently i am using head and shoulders as i have big prob of dandruff. It works good to clean the scalp. I use sunsilk conditioner with it.
Ah thanks for sharing. Have you tried TBS Ginger Anti Dandruff Shampoo. It works amazingly well in getting rid of dandruff.
I have used this shampoo a lot. I would say, if you want to really reap the benefits use the anti-dandruff hair oil first and wash off with this shampoo. The result would be drastically different.
But, so far, I find Biotique Margosa more effective with the oil. Hope this helps.
Enjoyed the review Sangeetha. 🙂

Haven’t tried the oil from this range. The bottle is almost over and I won’t consider buying the shampoo again. But I could give the oil a try.
What brand that u use for the anti dandruff oil?
It didn’t work on my hair too!!!

This shampoo seems to have failed many.
Looks like a dud!! totally skipping it .
Yup. Not an effective shampoo.
I did try the Himalaya Anti-Dandruff hair oil and this shampoo. Though this does not get rid of dandruff completely, it helped me overcome quite a bit of it! I always use a conditioner so I didn’t quite feel the dryness as such. Sad that it was a dud for you! Honest review but! xx

Thanks Emmy. Another reader also suggested the oil. I have to give it a try.
oops….disappointing one from himalaya but nicely reviewed dear 🙂

Thanks Aditi. I hoped it would work decently at least. But it was rather a disappointment.
This may sound ridiculous, but I think I was born with dandruff and I can’t seem to get rid of it, ever. :/ I’ll try the TBS shampoo you have mentioned. 🙂 BTW, I didn’t know you were married!!! 😀

😀 Hope the TBS shampoo works for you. Be sure to use a good conditioner after the shampoo. I’d recommend TBS Banana COnditioner.
Usually when a product promises something extra, something else gets sacrificed. That’s so nice of you to look for a shampoo for your husband!

I have never used this shampoo. Sad it didn’t work for so many others too..

It doesn’t seem to work any good. Thanks for honest review.

Yeah Zubaida. Best to try other options.
I somehow feel all himalaya shampoos are drying, I have tried 2 of them and honestly none of them helped much. This one can be totally skipped!
Vishakha@Reviewwali recently posted…Must Have Essentials For The Professional Wardrobe
This one can definitely be skipped. I have tried their Protein shampoo and it is quite good. But the anti-dandruff one was the complete opposite.
I don’t really prefer the shampoos that dry out hair and leave it frizzy. Though it good for oily and dandruff hair!
My hair is actually oily and it still managed to dry out my hair.
Dandruff shampoo always makes my hair dry and rough. So I usually do not use this type of shampoo.Recently I’ve been using patanjali’s anti dandruff shampoo which is really good, very soon I will do a review on it, thanks sangeeta for this honest review.
Anamika recently posted…Introducing our new family member!
Thanks Anamika. The Patanjali one sounds nice and I hope this one is mild and not drying. Would love to give it a try.
That’s bad that it didn’t work on dandruff much. I really trust Head & Shoulders to combat dandruff and even oiling hair regularly does help a lot, well for me but I am such a laze when it comes to oiling. Great, detailed review.
Chaste & Beautiful
Thank you. I love TBS Ginger Anti Dandruff shampoo, but this isn’t for those who tend to skip conditioner. I was hoping the Himalaya shampoo would work, but it failed and now my search continues.
Dandruff Shampoo are generally drying. This tops the worst list :/
Thanks for the review.
I have never used any shampoo by Himalaya, does not excite me 😀
Swathi recently posted…Dresslink Lookbook!!!
I haven’t tried too many anti-dandruff shampoos. So far this is the worst.
Sigh that this is not useful against dandruff. I am yet to find a great anti dandruff shampoo that has no chemicals for my very fine hair 🙁

We have it here in UAE.
Not yet tried.
Great honest review.

Thanks Zarrah. So far based on many readers opinion the shampoo is quite average. But it seems to work well the anti-dandruff oil from the series.
I have tried so many shampoos from different brands like Himalaya, Patanjali, Sri Sri Ayurveda, The Body Shop but my hair seems to respond well to L’Oreal, Tresseme and Organix hair products only!

Thanks Neha. Glad the review was helpful.
I had heard good things about this shampoo, until i read ur opinion. Anti Dandruff shampoos are a myth i feel, they hardly work unless medicated.

I rarely get dandruff. But when I do I reach for my trusted TBS Ginger Anti Dandruff Shampoo and it works like a charm every time. But it is drying so you can never ever skip conditioner with it. I was on the lookout for ones which are effective yet not drying. I hoped the Himalaya shampoo would help. But it failed to impress me in anyway.
I love Himalaya products, nice
kisses Adela Acanski
I love most of the products I have tried from Himalaya. But this shampoo was quite disappointing.
I have used this when I had dandruff and found it not very effective like the TBS one, so stopped using it
I actually love the TBS one. It works on me every single time. What anti-dandruff shampoo did you find effective?
Thanks a lot for sharing your views and saving our hair :D. Thankfully, I don’t have dandruff problem coz I know how irritating it feels.

Hello Sangeeta! Great article as usual. Personally I love the GKhair anti-dandruff shampoo. It truly works for my hair. The best shampoo I have ever used for controlling my hair dandruff. This is simply awesome. 🙂 <3
Thank you so much for the recommendation Mary. Will definitely check it out.
