Drunk Elephant Umbra Tinte Physical Daily Defense Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 30

Spring, summer, fall, winter, rain or shine – whatever be the season, you always need a sunscreen. It’s one of those absolute essentials that everyone should stock up on. I was almost running out of my old sunscreen and was feeling a little adventurous to try out something new. So, I browsed through many of them online, shortlisted a few of them (online shopping is a tough job, you know :D) and was finding it difficult to single out on one from the three I’d chosen. It became difficult to the extent that I could hear faint voices as though the sunscreens were talking to me saying “pick me, pick me.” After 4 cups of green tea, 8 meals, 20 glasses of water, 14 hrs of sleep and 48 hours on the clock, I finally decided to splurge on the Drunk Elephant Umbra Tinte Physical Daily Defense Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 30.

Having heard a lot of rave reviews about the brand, I was always keen on experimenting with their products. However, the price point is something that refrained me from making a purchase. Infused with ingredients like sunflower sprout extract, grape juice extract, jojoba, sunflower and raspberry seed oils – this sunscreen garnered my attention!

The Drunk Elephant Umbra Tinte Physical Daily Defense Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 30 had a “CLEAN” seal on the Sephora website. What that means according to Sephora is – “When you spot our Clean seal, you can be sure we’ve checked that this brand’s product is made without the ingredients you told us you’d most like to avoid. Clean at Sephora™ is formulated without: Sulfates SLS and SLES, parabens, formaldehydes, formaldehyde-releasing agents, phthalates, mineral oil, retinyl palmitate, oxybenzone, coal tar, hydroquinone, Triclosan, Triclocarban. All skincare, hair, and makeup brands with the Clean Seal have less than one percent of synthetic fragrances.”

The product claims “A sheer, physical sunscreen that delivers powerful UV protection and helps aid in the prevention of free radical and oxidative damage as well as photo aging with a hint of tint for a gorgeous, glowing finish. Loaded with potent antioxidants like astaxanthin and grape juice extract and infused with sunflower shoot extract, raspberry seed oil and marula oil, Umbra Tinte helps minimize the look of fine lines and wrinkles. This unique formulation is ideal for daily use without any white residue or greasiness and has a universally flattering tint for all skin tones. Umbra Tinte is non-irritating, totally free of fragrance and essential oils and is suitable for all skin types, including the most sensitive.”

MY EXPERIENCE WITH DRUNK ELEPHANT UMBRA TINTE PHYSICAL DAILY DEFENSE BROAD SPECTRUM SUNSCREEN SPF 30

I switched to mineral sunscreens a few years ago because they’re way better than the chemical ones since they actually do what they claim – protect your skin from sun damage. The chemical ones (these are the ones with ingredients that you can’t pronounce easily such as Octinoxate, Avobenzone and so on) aren’t that trustworthy as the ingredients are absorbed by the skin which in turn absorb the solar rays. That would prevent you from getting a sunburn but not save you from the aging type of UV rays. Whereas, most of the mineral sunscreens use Zinc Oxide as an active ingredient which stays on the surface of the skin and deflects the rays.

I don’t ever recall being excited to apply some sunscreen considering they all felt gooey and sticky. However, I just couldn’t wait to try out the Drunk Elephant Umbra Tinte Physical Daily Defense Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 30. On opening the squeeze tube and sniffing at it, I realized it was fragrance-free (started on a good note!). Out came a fawn-beige (yup, such a shade does exist) colored, not-so-thick sunscreen. The fact that it was tinted was a huge plus for me since I like using very minimal makeup on a daily basis.

On application, it felt a teeny-weeny sticky initially but that quickly changed to a very comfortable feeling on my skin. I liked the formula of the product as it was quite lightweight for a sunscreen and that made it easy to apply. I have combination skin – oily on my cheeks with large pores and dry around my mouth with it looking flaky sometimes. Added to that its sensitive too! Even though the sunscreen is adequately moisturizing, I always use a moisturizer underneath it to avoid the flaky dry skin as it makes it more visible. The sunscreen also seemed to minimize the size of my pores and the tint made my skin look more even toned. I was also surprised to see a gorgeous natural glow thanks to the hints of shimmer in the product.

In the past, a lot of sunscreens that I’ve used have left a white cast on my face after application. I remember being very careful about the quantity (not that I would slather on way too much) that I was using with the fear of ending up looking like I was going to a Halloween party! And that would totally defeat the purpose of protecting my skin from sun damage. With the Drunk Elephant Umbra Tinte Physical Daily Defense Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 30, I was glad that I didn’t experience any of that dreaded white cast. Even after repeated usage, my sensitive skin didn’t react adversely to the product and I absolutely fell in love with it.

In a nutshell, it sort of felt like an awesome BB cream with the added benefit of SPF which is a killer combination.

If you aren’t a fan of tinted sunscreen, don’t fret. They have a sheer variant too!
