Dove Dandruff Care Shampoo

What does my hair hate the most – it’s dandruff. These pesky little things clog your pores. Cause hair fall. They make your scalp itchy. Basically, they are a nuisance on your crown and they keep finding ways to come back and pester you. I doubt if there is actually a one-time solution to get rid of dandruff forever, but till then I have my arsenal of shampoos to my rescue. One of the products my husband and I tried last year was the Dove Dandruff Care Shampoo. Read more to find out if it helped rid of the white flakes.

The product claims to “At Dove we are dedicated to providing superior care solutions for hair experiencing dryness and damage. That is why we have developed specifically tailored ranges – Damage solution to repair damaged hair and nutritive solutions to make dry hair feel nourished. This shampoo contains ZPTO which is clinically proven to act on the origin of dandruff from the first wash and micro moisture serums helps to restore hair surface leaving hair soft and smooth.

My Experience with Dove Dandruff Care Shampoo

Over the years I have used many anti-dandruff shampoos with my favourite one so far being The Body Shop Ginger Anti Dandruff Shampoo. As much as I love the shampoo it dries my hair like it’s nobodies business – I have found the same to be true with other anti-dandruff shampoos as well. When I came across the Dove Dandruff Care Shampoo it claimed that it could get rid of dandruff without drying your tresses – I was super excited to read this and I couldn’t wait to try it out. Both my husband and I were suffering from mild dandruff and it seemed like the perfect time to put the product to test.

A little bit about our hair.

My hair: Oily scalp but dry lifeless hair.

My husband’s hair: Dry as the Sahara desert.

Any shampoo that I try out goes through the no conditioner test and one that claims to not dry out hair definitely wasn’t going to get exempted from this rule. Immediately after washing I could feel my hair clean, dandruff seemed to have temporarily vanished and my hair had a refreshing fragrance. But once my hair was dry it looked super frizzy, parched and the driest it had been. I was super disappointed with this. But I didn’t give up and the next few times I used the shampoo with different conditioners and with pre-oiling my hair. But the same dry situation prevailed and the only thing that could help my hair was pre-oiling and using a deep conditioning mask. It just didn’t seem practical to use a deep conditioning mask every time I used this shampoo. I also noticed that my dandruff never really went away and my scalp was also extra itchy because it was extra dry.

Dove Dandruff Care Shampoo

I wondered if only I faced this issue and asked my husband how his experience was – sadly his was the same. His remarks were “This shampoo is bad and it has done nothing to get rid of my dandruff”. He is also someone who doesn’t use conditioner regularly so his hair looked far worse than mine. In the end, I could only conclude that while this shampoo cleanses hair well, it dries it way too much and doesn’t do much to get rid of your dandruff.

The Good

  • Cleanses the hair well
  • Easy on the pocket
  • Easily available
  • Removes oil from hair well
  • Has a mild refreshing fragrance

The Bad

  • Super drying on your tresses
  • Not as effective on dandruff

Overall verdict:  2 / 5

    1. At other anti-dandruff shampoos don’t claim they won’t dry out hair but this one did that specifically and it made my hair super dry.

  1. I think I’ll stick to TBS Ginger shampoo for dandruff remedy…i love that one…also sometime head&shoulders is also my bet but that one has more chemicals…

  2. Thanks for the honest review. I never use anti dandruff shampoos as I have always found them drying the few times I did. There are very few medicated shampoos that work well on dandruff

  3. I too have used this and totally hated it! I have been using biotique bio margosa anti dandruff shampoo! Recommended it to my BF and his brother and both are in love with it! We all have dandruff and it works great! Have been using it for past 2 years

    1. I haven’t tried too many shampoos from Dove. In fact, I can’t recall any other shampoo apart from this. All I can say that this one failed me.

  4. I haven’t tried this shampoo yet. Thankfully dandruff isn’t a problem with me since I oil my hair regularly.

    1. Well lucky you. My husband gets it often despite oiling his hair frequently. So, I am always on the lookout for products that will help him out.

  5. I’ve stopped using such shampoos they harm the hair, make them completely dry. And that time the hairfall is at peak. I wouldn’t recommend anyone to use this shampoo.

  6. Once I have used it. I also dislike it for the same reason. It dried up the hair like hell.

  7. Been a victim of recurring dandruff since my college days and have tried literally everything in the market, the only shampoos that have worked for me are The Body Shop Ginger and Khadi Neem shampoo. Both are pretty good but both also leave my hair super dry. So I always condition with Tresemme Keratin or Climate Control conditioner. During winters, Tresemme doesn’t work and then I have to go for Loreal Hair Spa cream, but atleast both TBS and Khadi Neem keep the dandruff away 🙂

Also, I have tried putting a few drops of Tea Tree Essential Oil (Soulflower is the brand I have tried) in my oiling regimen (usually parachute coconut oil) and it also takes care of itchiness. You can also put a few drops of this essential oil in any shampoo to increase its effectiveness against dandruff and itchiness. I just discovered this about 5 months ago. Try it!
